During her following stay in the USA, Jayne taught Yr. 6 students at risk of failing grade level tests in Maths and English in an Elementary School serving communities with high levels of social disadvantage. Jayne returned to England to work for Birmingham’s Behaviour Support Service as Centre Manager of one of six Secondary Pupil Referral Units. After eight years of working in this environment and witnessing repeatedly the correlation between exclusion and reading ages under 9 yrs., Jayne embarked upon a mission, moving into Secondary education. Initially leading on Reading Intervention, her role in a Birmingham Ark Secondary school rapidly expanded to a senior leadership position with responsibility for culture, ethos and whole school literacy. Following her reading programmes’ success, Jayne began consulting in other schools within the Ark Network to develop best practice in literacy and reading.
In her BEP role, Jayne leads on the Secondary Reading Pilot, developing and delivering CPD programmes for leaders in education and an intensive training and coaching programme for teachers of reading.
Besides her consultancy commitment to BEP and the Ark Regional Network, Jayne remains a classroom practitioner, which ensures securely grounded elements of best practice are embedded in her training programmes. Targeting strategic school improvement for reading and literacy, Jayne aims to transform outcomes for young people by placing reading and ‘language for learning’ at the heart of every school curriculum.
