Dr Steve Ball

Chair of the Drama and Theatre Education Alliance

Dr Steve Ball, trained as a teacher and taught in Essex and Barcelona before training as an actor at the Welsh College of Music and Drama.

He worked for a number of children’s theatre and theatre in education companies and moved to Birmingham in 1986 where he founded Language Alive! one of the region’s leading educational theatre companies.

He has also been employed as a writer and producer for BBC Education, lectured at universities in the US and Australia, was Head of Arts for Birmingham City Council from 2001 to 2003 and Associate Director at the Birmingham REP from 2003 to 2021.

Steve has contributed to a number of journals and books, has an MA in Arts Management and a doctorate in Theatre in Health Education.

Steve was the National Participation Co-ordinator for the award winning We Are Here Because We Are Here project with artist Jeremy Deller and the National Theatre and was Executive Producer of ON THE EDGE, the ASSITEJ World Festival of Theatre for Young Audiences, held in Birmingham in July 2016.

He is the current Chair of the Drama and Theatre Education Alliance.
